What is Low Back Pain?
Low back pain is the discomfort or pain felt in the lower part of your spine, specifically the area between your ribs and hips.
It can feel like:
- A dull, constant ache
- Sharp or sudden pain
- Tightness that limits movement
It is common in environments that involve prolonged standing, long sitting hours, repetitive tasks, or manual handling.
After a long day at work, especially in roles that require standing, lifting, or repetitive movement, it’s common to feel soreness in your lower back. While this discomfort may seem normal, it’s often a sign that your body is under strain and needs attention.
What’s causing the low back pain?
- Standing for Long Periods: Spending hours on your feet places continuous pressure on your lower back muscles. Over time, this leads to fatigue and discomfort.
- Repetitive Movements: Daily tasks like bending, lifting, twisting, and reaching may seem harmless, but repeated over a full shift, they can strain your back and surrounding muscles.
- Poor Posture: Slouching or leaning forward shifts the body’s weight unevenly, putting extra stress on your spine and lower back.
- Incorrect Lifting Techniques: Lifting with your back instead of your legs increases the risk of strain and injury, especially when handling heavy or awkward loads.
- Weak or Fatigued Core Muscles: Your core supports your spine. When these muscles are weak or tired, your lower back compensates, leading to added strain.
- Lack of Movement Breaks: Staying in one position for too long reduces blood flow and causes muscles to stiffen, making discomfort more likely.
- Prolonged sitting can contribute to lower back stiffness, discomfort and fatigue, especially when you stay in one position for too long.
What you can do to protect your back.
Small, intentional changes can make a big difference:
- Take short breaks to stretch or move around during your shift
- Maintain good posture when standing or sitting
- Use proper lifting techniques—bend your knees and keep your back straight
- Strengthen your core to better support your spine
- Alternate tasks where possible to avoid repetitive strain
- Wear comfortable, supportive footwear to reduce pressure on your back
- Changing positions regularly, taking short movement breaks, and maintaining an active lifestyle can help reduce discomfort.
Lower back pain after a long shift is common, but it shouldn’t be ignored. Paying attention to how you move, stand, and work each day can help prevent long-term problems and keep you feeling strong, supported and pain-free.
