The Hidden Weight of Depression: Understanding Major Depressive Disorder
Covered Conversations – Mental Health Series Blogs.
Depression is often mistaken for sadness or a passing low mood, but it is a serious mental health condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and functions in daily life.
It is often invisible and it can drain energy, affect concentration, and make even simple daily tasks feel overwhelming.
How common is it?
Depression is a major global health concern:
- Globally: Around 280 million people live with depressive disorders, making it a leading cause of disability worldwide (WHO).
- Africa: An estimated 150 million people live with mental health conditions, with depression among the most common, though often underdiagnosed due to stigma and limited access to care.
- Kenya: Approximately 1 in 4 people seeking healthcare are dealing with a mental health condition, with depression, anxiety, and substance use being among the most common.
What contributes to Major Depressive Disorder?
Depression rarely has a single cause. It usually develops from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. These may include:
- Genetic vulnerability or family history
- Changes in brain chemistry or hormonal balance
- Chronic stress or high emotional demands
- Trauma, grief, or significant loss
- Ongoing illness or pain
- Relationship difficulties or social isolation
- Financial pressure or work‑related stress
Often, depression develops gradually, making it difficult to pinpoint when things began to change. It looks different from person to person, but common patterns include:
- Persistent low mood, emptiness, or emotional numbness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
- Constant fatigue or low motivation
- Changes in sleep patterns or appetite
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness
- Withdrawing from people or social activities
- Physical symptoms such as headaches, body aches, or digestive issues
When these symptoms last for two weeks or more and interfere with daily functioning, they should not be ignored.
The hidden impact of depression
Depression is often invisible making many people suffer in silence. They may push themselves to keep going, dismiss their symptoms, or fear of being judged if they speak up. Over time, untreated depression can:
- Affect work performance
- Strain relationships
- Weaken physical health
- Reduce overall quality of life.
Left unsupported, depression can deepen feelings of isolation and make recovery feel increasingly out of reach.
While not all cases of depression can be prevented, small, intentional actions can reduce risk and strengthen emotional resilience.
- Notice early signs such as persistent low mood, fatigue, withdrawal, or irritability and respond early rather than ignoring them
- Prioritise rest and sleep, as ongoing exhaustion increases vulnerability to depression
- Manage stress realistically by setting limits, pacing yourself, and reducing overload
- Maintain supportive relationships to reduce isolation and strengthen emotional resilience
- Express emotions openly through conversation, reflection, or healthy outlets instead of suppressing them
- Set healthy boundaries at work, in caregiving roles, and in personal relationships
- Seek professional support early when stress or low mood becomes overwhelming or persistent
