Breathing Matters: Understanding Chronic Respiratory Diseases
Breathing is something most of us do without a second thought…until it becomes difficult. For millions of people living with chronic respiratory diseases, every breath can be a daily challenge.
These long‑term conditions affect the airways and other structures of the lungs, often limiting quality of life and, in severe cases, threatening survival.
A Growing Global and Local Health Burden
The most common chronic respiratory diseases are asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alongside conditions such as chronic bronchitis. Together, asthma and COPD affect over half a billion people worldwide and contribute to nearly four million deaths each year.
In Kenya, chronic respiratory diseases account for approximately 12% of all outpatient visits.
Risk factors
Several factors increase the likelihood of developing chronic respiratory disease, including:
- Tobacco use, including exposure to second‑hand smoke.
- Air pollution, both indoors and outdoors, from smoke, pollen, and infectious organisms.
- Occupational hazards, such as chemical vapours, dust, and irritants.
- Repeated lung infections, especially during childhood.
- Genetic predisposition, which can increase vulnerability.
Signs & Symptoms
Symptoms often develop gradually and may worsen over time if left untreated. Common signs include:
- Persistent coughing, often with mucus production (especially in COPD)
- Shortness of breath, particularly during physical activity
- Wheezing or whistling sounds while breathing
- Chest tightness or heaviness
Living with Chronic Respiratory Disease
Although chronic respiratory diseases are often lifelong, effective management can significantly improve symptoms and overall quality of life. Key management strategies include:
- Smoking cessation is the single most important step to slow disease progression
- Medication such as bronchodilators and inhaled steroids to open airways
- Pulmonary rehabilitation including breathing exercises, airway‑clearing techniques, and regular physical activity
- Vaccinations including flu and pneumonia vaccines, to prevent serious respiratory infections
With early diagnosis, proper management, and healthy lifestyle choices, people living with chronic respiratory diseases can breathe easier and live fuller, more active lives.
