Jubilee Live Free Race Hosts Over 1200 Cyclists

Jubilee Live Free Race Convenes Cyclists and Families for a Day of Fun and Wellness Advocacy

Nairobi, Kenya, Sunday 20th November 2022

Jubilee Insurance and the Grand Nairobi Bike Race today hosted the largest cycling event in East Africa. The Jubilee Live Free Race powered by GNBR brought together over 1,200 cyclists from the East African Community, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and South Africa.

A further 1,000 non-cyclists and fans were present to cheer on the competing teams. Over 22 corporates also partnered with Jubilee Insurance and the Grand Nairobi Bike Race for the event.
The Jubilee Live Free Race, which leveraged on the growing cycling interest, advocated for physical activity, wellness, and environmental conservation. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 out of 4 people who seek healthcare in Kenya have a mental health condition. Research has shown that physical activity improves wellness and mental health.

Jubilee Holdings Limited Chairman Nizar Juma noted that the wellness agenda is the next frontier as Jubilee Insurance commemorates its 85th Year. The Jubilee Live Free Race is centered on our company’s commitment to promote wellness. Good health and wellbeing are at the core of economic, social, and personal development. Promoting well-being is the foundational step we must take to create sustainable communities.

“For the past few years, people have gone through extremely difficult times in Kenya and the world over. Wellness and mental health has been tested by the pandemic, rising cost of living and drastic climate changes. The Jubilee Live Free Race has given our stakeholders an opportunity to exercise and destress. Promoting wellness and mental health will continue to be our key priority,” noted Mr. Juma.

The Jubilee Live Free Race had six categories namely Black Mamba, Family Fun Ride, Kiddie Race, Individual Race, Veterans Race, Para Cycling Race, and the Main Race.
Commenting about the Jubilee Live Free Race, Grand Nairobi Bike Race Co- Director Loise Wachira noted that cycling is one of the sports that promotes exercise, social bonding, and environmental conservation.

“The effects of climate change have recently hit home resulting to drought and extreme weather patterns. We must all do what we can to reverse global warming. The Jubilee Live Free Race not only provided an opportunity to unwind but also advocated for the adoption of non-motorized transport as a step towards environmental conservation,” said Ms. Wachira.

While commenting about the Jubilee Live Free Race, Kenya Urban Roads Authority Corporate Communications Director John Cheboi noted that the event came at a critical time when the world was commemorating World Road Safety Day.

“We are excited to be part of the Jubilee Live Free Race. This event has sensitized the public that every road user including cyclists should be respected on the road. All players must come together to promote road safety. On KURA’s part, we have recently developed new road infrastructure that is inclusive and serves the needs of the masses. We know this will go a long way in assuring cyclists’ safety on the road while encouraging them to embrace physical activity through cycling.”

Commenting about the event, Nation Media Group Chief Executive Officer Stephen Gitagama noted that corporates have a responsibility to support the communities they serve and to address pertinent issues that affect them.

“The Jubilee Live Free Race has given us an opportunity to put a collective voice towards the advocacy of wellness and environmental conservation. Also commenting about the event, Diamond Trust Bank Chief of Staff to the CEO Farouk Khimji said that creating occasions where people can take a break from work will go a long way in promoting mental wellness and general health.

“We are excited to have been the entertainment partner during the Jubilee Live Free Race. Giving people an opportunity to destress is very crucial in improving productivity and wholeness. Through the different activities at the Jubilee Live Free Race, we believe that the participants have been energized to continue pursuing their aspirations. We are confident the event has also educated the public on the importance of safeguarding mental health,” noted Mr. Khimji.

Jubilee Insurance has partnered with the Grand Nairobi Bike Race as the title sponsor to host the Jubilee Live Free Race in Nairobi. The partnership which will run for three years will see the next edition of this event replicated in Uganda and Tanzania.
