Live Free Race Story

The Jubilee Live Free Race, powered by the Grand Nairobi Bike Race (GNBR), is an annual regional cycling event hosted in Nairobi that draws participants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and over 30 other nationalities. Launched in 2021, it has grown into one of East Africa’s most anticipated sporting events, offering categories for professional cyclists, para-cyclists, families, and children, including the 75 km Main Race, 45 km Black Mamba and Para-Cycling races, 15 km Family Fun Ride, and Kiddie Race.

The race is a platform for driving social impact advocating for physical activity, improving mobility for children and adults who have lost limbs by supporting access to prosthetics, and promoting environmental conservation through initiatives such as planting kitchen gardens, food towers, and fruit trees, as well as restoring water towers in marginalized schools. With thousands of participants and millions invested in cash prizes, community programs, and sustainability projects, the Jubilee Live Free Race continues to unite the region in a shared vision of wellness, inclusivity, and lasting positive change.

Our 5 Year Journey

The Grand Nairobi Bike Race (GNBR), launched in 2019, began as a modest initiative to unite cyclists of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds for a day of cycling through Nairobi’s vibrant streets. Starting with just 450 participants, the race has grown exponentially over five years, reaching over 900 riders in 2022, 1,500 in 2023 and more than 2,600 in 2024, with Jubilee Insurance joining as the main sponsor in 2022. This growth reflects not only the race’s popularity but also the rising cycling culture in Kenya and the wider East African region, drawing participants from across the country and internationally, including 21 foreign nationalities last year. The event’s inclusive format, featuring competitive categories, Black Mamba, para cyclists, family rides and kiddie races, has cemented its place as a key fixture on the regional sporting calendar, celebrating cycling, community and wellness, while marking 2025 as the race’s fifth anniversary.

2021

Inaugural year with 450 participants, marking the beginning of a journey to grow cycling culture in Nairobi.

2022

900 participants joined the race, with Jubilee Insurance coming on board as the main sponsor, strengthening its reach and impact.

2023

Participation rose to 1,500 cyclists, reflecting the race’s growing popularity locally and regionally.

2024

Over 2,600 riders took part at Nyayo Stadium, including participants from 21 countries, showcasing the race’s international appeal.

2025

Targeting 3,500 participants for the Jubilee Live Free Race, continuing its expansion and impact across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and beyond.

Impact And Growth

The Jubilee Live Free Race has grown into a major regional sporting event, targeting 3,500 participants, with over KES 80 million invested since its inception, attracting riders from 30+ nationalities, offering KES 3 million in cash prizes, and creating measurable community impact through prosthetic support for children, environmental projects, and wellness initiatives across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi.
